About Me

'Advertising Ashtrays' Collection; 'Edward Lear' Collection
This site is dedicated to ashtray collector and 'Edward Lear' admirer Roger Musgrave (1929-2007), a London based advertising copywriter who enjoyed the occasional cigar and (legitimate) puff on a pipe. Bemused at how he survived for so long in an industry which he claimed "the peak was reached between the ages of 30", Roger finally retired at 59 and followed his passion for collecting quality ashtrays produced by companies to advertise their own brands. The imaginative and well crafted designs, often witty and kitsch, were created in an era when smoking was considered to be sophisticated, harmless and socially 'de rigueur'. Roger was also a lifelong admirer of the artist and limerick writer 'Edward Lear'. His collection of books, prints and related material are catalogued here for possible sale in 2012 which will mark Edward Lear's bicentenary.
